Green Design: Brands We Love – Green Gifts from GeboMana
They say it’s better to give than receive. What of you could receive and give at the same time? T-shirts from GeboMana do just that. Each unique T-shirt is made from organic cotton and features hand painted designs created by fashion designers/artists from around the world. Limited-edition, each shirt is hand numbered; once they sell out they are gone forever. More than a one-of-a-kind fashion statement, every T-shirt from GeboMana gives the gift of education to a child. With every purchase GeboMana is able to send an underprivileged child to school for 2 months.
At Ecoist, we know the importance of providing unique gifts that do more. GeboMana wants every recipient of a GeboMana T-shirt to do more. Purchase a GeboMana tee for someone important in your life and a child is sent to school for 2 months, the recipient then purchases another shirt as a gift, that same child has four months of schooling paid for. Keep the chain of giving going and through a simple t-shirt a child has received an education than can change their life.
World poverty won’t end because of a t-shirt, but a t-shirt can change a child’s life forever.

Eco Chic: A Runny nose and a fever is never in fashion.
November means fantastic things: holiday parties, extra time with friends and family, pumpkin flavored everything. Along with the good comes the misery of cold and flu season. Commercial disinfectants work, but they also contain harmful chemicals. The good news is you can make cheaper, safer natural disinfectants from things you probably already have around the house.
Distilled White Vinegar – On top of being inexpensive, white vinegar is very effective at killing germs, mold and other illness causing baddies. Simply fill a clean spray bottle with the undiluted vinegar. If you are afraid that your house will smell a little too natural; add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil (orange is always nice).
Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) – Another low-cost germ fighter, undiluted hydrogen peroxide can be used to disinfect any hard surface. Studies show you can boost the effectiveness of both white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide by using them one after another. Please be sure to store each separately; it doesn’t matter which order they are applied.
Tea Tree Oil – A natural anti-bacterial, tea tree oil can be found at most health food stores. Add 20-30 drops to water for a cleaner that will keep you healthy and leave behind a pleasant smell. Tea tree oil is particularly good at killing mold and mildew.
Cold and flu season doesn’t have to equal a house full of toxic chemicals. In just a couple of minutes, you can have a natural, germ fighting arsenal at your fingertips.

Eco-Fashion Tips: Green Your Inside for a Greener Outside
Yesterday marked the beginning of World Go Vegan Week. The international event, happening for the fifth time, aims to “promote a vegan diet as a compassionate, sustainable and healthy way of eating and living.” We agree. Did you know that all Ecoist products are vegan? Well they are. Check out Ecoist’s collections of vegan handbags.
Even if you’re not a full-time vegan, try going vegan for this week. You can join a growing roster of celebrities that are embracing the vegan lifestyle including former President Clinton, Glee’s Lea Michele and Emily Deschanel. Plus, a vegan lifestyle greatly reduces your carbon footprint.
As part of World Go Vegan Week, Mercy for Animals teamed up with restaurants across America to offer special vegan menus. Unfortunately, Miami is not on the list (maybe next year) but restaurants in Chicago, New York City, Dallas and Columbus, Ohio will all be participating. If your city is not on the list don’t fret there are still plenty of ways for you to get involved. Research a local vegan eatery, host a vegan pot luck or put together a vegan bake sale (because pie brings people together).
If you are vegan, share some of your favorite local restaurants or recipes. If you decide to try veganism for the first time let us know how your week is going.
